01 / About the project
Summary
In 2024, we had the opportunity to pitch an innovative online interactive tool for L'Oreal, aimed at enhancing their makeup product try-on experience. This project was showcased at the L'Oreal Tech Showcase event in Dubai. The existing tool on L'Oreal's shopping website was akin to a Snapchat filter and lacked the sophistication and professionalism needed to truly engage users and drive sales.
02 / Understanding the problem
Reimagining Beauty Experiences
All the existing makeup try-on tool available online lacked depth, feeling more like a novelty filter rather than a professional service. The makeup industry is vast and overwhelming, with many users facing challenges in making confident decisions about which products suit them without expert guidance. The digital tool didn’t provide the same level of trust and expertise that customers seek when purchasing makeup. Therefore, our task was to transform this tool into a more valuable, trustworthy experience that could replace the need for in-person consultations and ultimately drive higher engagement and sales.

03 / The Solution
Integrating AI for Personalization
To solve this problem, we incorporated AI to deliver personalized makeup recommendations. A quick face scan allowed the AI to analyze skin tone and facial features, which was crucial in providing accurate suggestions. We incorporated features like AI look summary, personalized recommendations etc. We further brainstormed different ideas to implement using the AI technology available which will enhance the user experience and gives a unique and fulfilling experience.
Consulting Experts for Insight
We consulted makeup specialists to generate practical ideas that would enhance the user experience. The specialists provided insights on skin types, tones, and facial features, ensuring that the AI's recommendations were accurate and tailored to individual users. This collaboration helped create a personalized experience that mimicked the expertise of a professional makeup artist, giving users confidence in their selections.

Designing a Professional Interface
We began the design process by laying out the interface and features, followed by multiple revisions to perfect the concept. The high-fidelity prototype was developed with all the discussed functionalities, and we conducted user testing to gather feedback. Further refinements were made based on consultations with makeup specialists.
Creating a Personalized Experience
The final design included an onboarding survey to gather basic skin information and a face scan feature to detect skin tone and facial structure. This data generated a personalized look book for users to explore. The interface categorized products into Face, Eyes, and Lips, and provided a summary and guide post-try-on, with direct links to purchase products.

Recognition
The outcome was a sophisticated, interactive makeup try-on experience that significantly elevated L'Oréal’s digital presence. The tool’s AI-driven recommendations bridged the gap between trying and buying makeup products online, allowing users to make confident choices without needing a makeup artist. The project was well-received at the L'Oréal Tech Showcase in Dubai, where it was recognized for its innovation and focus on user-centered design.
